Who are Young Carers
Young carers are children or young people under the age of 18 years, whose lives are in some way restricted due to the need to take responsibility
for someone who is ill, disabled, experiencing mental health issues or affected by substance misuse..
|
|
What do they do?
Young carers undertake many tasks similar to those of an adult carer. As well as attending school,
a young carer may have to help with some of the following:
- • Medical, personal and intimate care.
- • Provide emotional support.
- • Domestic chores, such as cooking and shopping.
- • Care of younger siblings.

The cost of caring
If a young carer's role goes unrecognised, they remain unsupported and the huge responsibilities they face on a daily basis
may have an effect on other areas of their lives, such as:
- • Lack of time to just have fun
- • Loneliness
- • Struggling to find time for homework
- • Poor attendance / late for school
- • Tiredness
